EMERGING VOICES SERIES

HOW DO YOU SEE ME?
Nariman Massoumi
UK / 2017 / 30 minutes

How do you see me? is a quietly observed documentary portrait of the filmmaker’s mother, Manijeh, an Iranian immigrant who has lived in Britain since the 1980s.

Combining family photographs that map a colourful personal history tied to significant political events, with a focus on objects and spaces in the domestic environment, the film examines Manjieh’s everyday life and her relationship with the filmmaker’s father, through intimate and at times troubling observational encounters. An exploration of home through the complex interaction between filmmaker and subject, mother and son.

Nariman Massoumi is a filmmaker and Lecturer at the University of Bristol with a background in documentary television production. His research specialises in Iranian/diasporic cinemas and documentary film practice, with a wider interest in British/Iranian film cultures and histories. His practice-as-research PhD, awarded in 2016, was on the relationship between documentary ethnography, family and displacement. Currently, he is working on a project about Anglo-Iranian Oil Company films. He is an Associate Editor of Screenworks, the peer-reviewed journal of film and screen practice research.

EMERGING VOICES features the work of student and early career visual anthropologist, filmmakers, artists and those who conduct research by practice with visual methodologies.
