The Eventfulness of Images
Focusing on political images in Indonesia, this talk will present an argument for thinking of images as events rather than objects, representations, or social agents. I will suggest that the “image-event” offers analytic purchase on the political work of images by attending to their processual qualities as they move, mutate, and proliferate within contemporary, complexly mediated public spheres.
Bio: Karen Strassler is Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Queens College and the CUNY Graduate Center. Her research has focused on photography, mediation, memory, and politics in contemporary Indonesia. She is the author of Refracted Visions: Popular Photography and National Modernity in Java (Duke UP 2010) and Demanding Images: Transparency and Mediation in a Democratizing Public Sphere (Duke UP, forthcoming).
