Towards an anthropology of coups in Fiji

Jas Kaur, SOAS

This event is free, but places must be booked.  To book tickets please go to: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/rai-research-in-progress-jas-kaur-tickets-14634166185

Jas’ research is based on ethnographic fieldwork in Fiji, and looks at how people talk about and perform identity, belonging and nation in relation to – but also in contention against – coups. She is interested in the ontology of coups, in coups as epistemologies and how these interact with and intersect other layers of knowing and being in the world.  She draws on ideas of cosmology and immanence, as well as on her experience of being an Indian (and also British) researcher in a so-called ethnic conflict society to analyse the relationship between different scales of self and other – between individuals, between groups, between society and state.
