Film Screening of ‘Return of the Nightingales’
and talk with filmmaker John Baily

John Baily (Emeritus Professor, Goldsmiths)

chaired by David Shankland (RAI)

In 2010 Afghan musicologist Ahmad Sarmast reopened Kabul’s defunct School of Fine Arts and Music as the coeducational vocational music school designated The Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM). A year later, at the behest of London University’s Institute of Music, ethnomusicologist John Baily visited the school and documented what he observed in the 30 minutes’ film Return of the Nightingales. In this seminar we shall screen the film, discuss ANIM’s achievements up to August 2021 and the situation of its students and alumni today.
