Under the Shadow: Rage and Revolution in Modern Turkey
Representations of Turkey in western media has undergone a startling change after the summer of 2013, when activists staged an Occupy-style protest in Istanbul’s Gezi Park. Kaya Genç will talk about his book “Under the Shadow” where he interviews young activists who have diametrically opposing views about that transformative event. According to Genç, it was after the protests that both progressives and conservatives of the country had rediscovered their authentic voice — as inheritors of the westernizing Young Turk and the conservative Young Ottoman traditions, they have since been articulating their views through an increasingly more forceful rhetoric.
