Drawing on historic recordings from Africa, Asia and South America
Easy access to music and sound in the digital world presents new challenges to archives such as the British Library. How far should they be ‘gatekeepers’ when it comes to world and ethnographic recordings, particularly when people from the cultures represented have very diverse expectations and uneven access to technologies?

The annual Royal Anthropological Institute Blacking Lecture is named in honour of esteemed ethnomusicologist and anthropologist John Blacking (1928-1990).
