The Persistence of the ‘Observational Method’ in Ethnographic Film

Film extracts and discussion with Gary Kildea

Royal Anthropological Institute, 50 Fitzroy Street, London W1T 5BT

Referring to excerpts from his own films (Trobriand Cricket, Celso & Cora, Koriam’s Law) and some from the Visual Cultural Studies program at the University of Tromsø (where he has been coaching) Gary Kildea will reflect on why observational cinema (or cinéma vérité or direct cinema) has persisted as the dominant method in visual anthropology whilst seeming to have falling out of favour in mainstream documentary.

This event is free, but tickets must be booked. To book tickets please go to http://garykildea.eventbrite.co.uk.
